Chef Boulud’s Lessons in Letters




Discipline, mentorship, creativity, teamwork, and loyalty are five of the “Ten Commandments of a Chef” that world-renowned, award-winning restaurateur and Chef Daniel Boulud discussed during our Seventh Grade Father/Son event on Wednesday, April 14. For this annual tradition, our boys and their fathers or father figures gather for dinner and to engage with an author who provides insightful, inspiring messages that resonate with the school’s mission. The evening celebrates the very special and vital connection between father, or any paternal influence (granddad, grandmother, family friend) and son at a pivotal moment as our boys prepare to enter their graduating year at Saint David’s.

Chef Boulud based his talk on his book Letters to a Young Chef, written to inspire young people interested in pursuing a culinary arts career. The letters advance universal advice on how to successfully pursue one’s passion and purpose. Most important, Chef Boulud encouraged our boys to be optimistic and strong when faced with life’s oppositions or challenges, and to “believe in yourself and in the people who love and support you.” A perfect message that speaks to our school wide theme of resilience in this challenging year.

Our school is grateful to Chef Boulud for sharing his wisdom, passion, and expertise with the Saint David’s community.

"The Wisdom Within" - Bringing Sound to Space

In the second entry of our Teaching Boys Initiative's quarterly blog series, "The Wisdom Within," Saint David's reflective practitioner and Master Teacher Cathy O'Neill explores the pedagogical power of play in the education of young boys. BRINGING SOUND TO SPACE It began with a mound of mangled metal and the vapor of a vision gleaned from recent comments and random fact-dropping by the Pre-K boys. Unsure of what exactly I was looking for, but fueled by the idea of a makeshift rocket to dovetail with our upcoming space unit, I gingerly picked through the scrap pile until my hands grazed an old VW control panel devoid of its dashboard. Eureka! An array of knobs, dials, and buttons - while in reality, dead as doornails - in the right small hands, would become the epicenter of our NASA-inspired dramatic play corner. "The Wisdom Within" - Building Student Motivation Through Choice
