Celebration of Music at Saint David's

With Saint David's Winter Festival of Art and Music underway, we brighten the dark days of winter by celebrating the arts pillar of a Saint David's education.

The music celebration culminated this past week with yesterday's Winter Concert for Upper School students and families, featuring classic and contemporary selections performed by our Percussion Ensemble (John Francis, Director), Chamber Singers (Phyllis Clark, Director; with Meg Myette, Piano), and Saint David's Philharmonic Ensemble (Philip Hough, Director; with Aaron Van Heyningen, Assistant Conductor; and Meg Myette, Piano).

Our Saint David's Philharmonic Ensemble previewed the ambitious program they will play during this upcoming Sunday's Festival of Orchestras concert at Carnegie Hall. Their accomplished performance yesterday showed they are more than ready to perform on the stage of that iconic venue.



All of the boys, led by their music teachers, directors and coaches, commit to long hours of practice time over several months in order to master their pieces and gel as a group. To be successful on this journey, they must respect a sometimes grueling process and one another.

"The Wisdom Within" - Bringing Sound to Space

In the second entry of our Teaching Boys Initiative's quarterly blog series, "The Wisdom Within," Saint David's reflective practitioner and Master Teacher Cathy O'Neill explores the pedagogical power of play in the education of young boys. BRINGING SOUND TO SPACE It began with a mound of mangled metal and the vapor of a vision gleaned from recent comments and random fact-dropping by the Pre-K boys. Unsure of what exactly I was looking for, but fueled by the idea of a makeshift rocket to dovetail with our upcoming space unit, I gingerly picked through the scrap pile until my hands grazed an old VW control panel devoid of its dashboard. Eureka! An array of knobs, dials, and buttons - while in reality, dead as doornails - in the right small hands, would become the epicenter of our NASA-inspired dramatic play corner. "The Wisdom Within" - The Superpower of Performance
